Lay's Wavy French Onion Soup

Evidently as part of a promotion for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, this product represents France.

Onion powder is immediately evident here, but it avoids the pitfall of being too sweet, which I have experienced on past Lay's onion products.  Along with the onion is a heavy maltodextrin/MSG like flavor that is hard to miss.  There is also a lot of brown meatiness to simulate the beef broth of French Onion Soup, and it does well and making sure that this snack isn't too sweet.  In the end, this is a very enjoyable chip.

Pringles Cheeseburger

One of the shining examples on how junk food is made to taste like complex cuisine, and cheeseburgers are often the subject of these successes.  Individually, your tongue with detect distinct flavors of charred beef, cheese, onion, mustard, and pickle.  Add to this a very salty delivery, and it's one of the best potato chips (if you can call it that) that I've ever tasted. 

Funyuns Sour Cream & Funyuns

We certainly have seen meta products like these before, haven't we?

Anyway, these seem to be like regular Funyuns with "sour cream & onion" seasoning on them instead of the traditional seasoning, which is definitely different.  The milk powder is noticeable, and the spices are bold, almost even like ranch dressing seasoning.  I would say these are better than the original.

Seven Select Big Bite Hot Dog Potato Chips

Seven Eleven's brand of chips do kick out some odd limited time varieties sometimes.

This one is very straightforward.  A salt & vinegar base and, just like the bag depicts, added flavorings of smoke, ketchup, mustard, onion, and dill pickle.  These are a ton of fun - I'll pick them up every time I see them.

Lay's Sweet Onion

In 2012 Lays seemed to issue this limited edition flavor out of the blue: Sweet Onion.

I wasn't too enamored with the idea, and I learned that I felt the same about the taste.

With such a simple flavor base, as I expected, Lays calls upon a few other ingredients to play a support role.  Each bite begins strong with onion, which isn't unpleasant, but a formidable sweetness arises in the form of sugar.  Perhaps Lays worked a bit too hard to drive home the "sweet" onion character, as this combination doesn't seem very natural.  Midway through each bite and on the swallow, there is a strong herbal note of thyme, and perhaps even parsley and oregano.  The thyme note is strong, and I feel it's misplaced.  This strong herbal punch reminds me a bit of Lay's Chicken and Waffles.  Imagine a bunch of potatoes drowned in a run-of-the-mill sweet onion salad dressing, and you've got the picture.

I'm a potato chip freak, and if someone gave me another bag of these, it would gather dust on the shelf.  We're barely in the 2-NOM range, here.

Doritos Sour Cream & Onion

I saw these Doritos in a store a year or two ago and have regretted not picking them up ever since.  They've finally come back, and I nabbed them with an amount of greed that surprised even myself.

Unfortunately, the payoff wasn't huge.

These aren't a perfect translation of sour cream & onion potato chips because they can't be; the exact flavors used for potatoes don't exactly harmonize the same way with corn.  Unfortunately, I don't think Doritos' choice of flavors harmonize with corn either.

These amount to more like a Cool Ranch Lite than sour cream & onion.  There's plenty of onion in the seasoning, and also a good bit of supporting herbs and spices, many of which are found in the brand's Cool Ranch variety.  There's also the light cheese/sour milk powder on there to simulate the sour cream, but overall it tastes like something other than sour cream and onion.  While moderately tasty, A die hard SC&O fan would find these very disappointing.
